Longer around, AOL’s mail service, sometimes called AIM Mail but officially called AOL Mail, is alive and well. You can log in to AIM Mail here using your old AIM username or full AOL email address. What Was AIM? AIM was a chat service available from desktops, mobile devices, and web browsers. You could log in with your AOL account to instantly communicate with any of your contacts. AIM didn’t only support one-on-one chats and group IMs. It also allowed you to chat with your Google Talk friends and connected to your social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, YouTube, Foursquare, and others) to show your feeds, trade files, and share location updates. If you had an old phone that didn’t support the mobile app, you could use the AIM for TXT service to send and receive text messages with your Buddy List through SMS. Another way to use it was through AIM Mail (AOL Mail). There used to be a chat integration that connected with AIM, letting you view emails and chat messages in one place. A team of nostalgic programmers have reverse engineered AOL 3.0 and put it back online for everyone to enjoy. It’s called RE-AOL and it aims to recreate the ‘90s era version of the early internet, complete with low-fi graphics, chat rooms, and all the noises you’re familiar with from the days of AOL Instant Messenger.The project is the brainchild of Canadian programmer Mike Killingbeck, who first got the idea to bring AOL back during the pandemic. He told Motherboard he was depressed and that he needed a project to keep his mind in the right place. “Reminiscing about my days as a ‘90s teenager on AOL provided me an escape from a looming midlife crisis. But after AIM finally went offline in 2017, it was all gone. He decided to bring it back. Killingbeck reverse engineered the code by using a similar project as a base. The previous project was someone else’s interpretation of AOL’s P3 protocol. He put this together with some old incomplete technical manuals, and after a few months of trial and error was able to make make a server that would talk to a AOL’s old client software.I’ve messed around on RE-AOL and, to be honest, there’s not a whole lot going on there right now. You can make a friends list and chat with people on its version of AIM and wander into random chat rooms, but that’s about it. The news does not update and email does not work. IM had been a part of the AOL browser as early as 1988, in the form of lists of acquaintances that let AOL customers know when their friends, relatives, or other acquaintances who also used AOL were online. Such lists were called “buddy lists” after the rollout of AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) in 1997. AIM flourished, and, as the popularity of the Internet grew, so did the demand for software systems that allowed real-time conversation. The late 1980s also saw the introduction of Internet Relay Chat (IRC) software for group conversations, and by the mid-1990s other IM software, such as ICQ (or “I Seek You”) for non-AOL Internet users, also became available.
